VINEMONT, Ala. – The South Vinemont Town Council on Tuesday approved the resolution authorizing Mayor Dodson to sign a lease agreement with Girl Scouts Troop #10288 which has been a yearly agreement that allows the Troop to use the community center on the first and third Mondays.

The vote to pass the Ordinance to increase the sales tax of the city by 0.5% was not unanimous. Council member Sonya Copeland voted not to approve the ordinance as some in the community had raised concerns to her that the extra revenue would not be earmarked for a specific use. The 0.5 % would instead go to a general fund to be used when needed.

Mayor Dobson discussed how earmarking the fund limits what can be done with the revenue. “By putting it in a general fund, we can move it around as necessary in order to make the budget like it needs to be.”

Council member Chris Thompson said, “We are behind the times right now. We are at 8.5%, so we need to be right where everybody else is.” The ordinance will be on the agenda again next month.

District Attorney candidate Champ Crocker spoke at the meeting, saying that because he grew up in Vinemont, so he had a vested interest in the community. He added, “I’ve got three main priorities which are law enforcement, victim services and transparency. When it comes to law enforcement, I’m a big believer in public safety. We’ve got to set a new standard for victims to have the justice and acknowledgment, and respect they deserve.” Transparency, contacting your officials should not be hard, and I intend to set a new standard when it comes to transparency in our criminal justice system.”

Resolutions passed include:

  • A one-time pay supplement for full-time employees
  • Traffic light repair bill
  • Surplus of a 2007 Kubota Mower
  • Purchase of a Grasshopper Mower

Once Mike Graves gave an update on sales of assets, the meeting was adjourned.

The council meets at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday each month at Vinemont Town Hall. The public is invited to attend.
