DODGE CITY, Ala. – The Dodge City Town Council on Thursday accepted the resignation of Councilman Murray Lowe, whose family will be relocating away from the town. Before the vote, Murray, who has served on the council since 2009, spoke fondly of his time on the council and of his fellow members, thanking them as he did. Mayor Tawana Canada and the other council members reciprocated, praising Lowe’s contributions and telling him that they accepted his resignation but were not happy about having to do so. Canada particularly noted Lowe’s efforts at Dodge City’s senior center.

“Murray has a real soft spot for our seniors,” said Canada. “He was there helping whenever they needed him, and they will probably miss him the most.”

The council declared Lowe’s seat vacant, and scheduled a work session for Saturday, Feb. 20 to consider candidates to fill the vacancy.

Other council business

After hearing a report from Grady Parsons of Living Waters Services, which oversees the town’s water treatment, the council voted to renew its sewage permit with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management in the amount of $4,260.

The council also approved up to $7,000 in repairs to the basketball court at the town’s park, including new concrete and other items like new nets.

Canada told the council that the General Budget Fund has reached $453,000 and, according to previous council practice, recommended the transfer of $50,000 to pay toward Dodge City’s USDA loan. The council approved that payment, which will leave a balance of $127,000 on the loan.

The Dodge City Town Council meets at 6 p.m. on the second Thursday evening of each month at Dodge City Town Hall. The public is invited to attend, subject to occupancy and social distance restrictions.
