CCCDC awards more than $98K in community grants

CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Community Development Commission (CCCDC) met and awarded a total of $98,225 in grants Tuesday night.

The following grant requests were approved:

  • Town of Baileyton – $12,000 for electric meter for park 
  • Vinemont-Providence Volunteer Fire Department – $12,000 for turnout gear 
  • VFW Post 2214 – $8,000 for SGB shot medical procedure for veterans with PTSD 
  • United Way of Cullman County – $12,000 for 19 partner programs
  • Bernard Prep School – $12,000 for virtual learning technology/infrastructure 
  • Vinemont High School – $12,000 for outdoor seating for safety
  • Holly Pond Guy Hunt Library – $12,000 for science, technology, engineering, arts, math resources
  • Colony Tom Bevill Library – $12,000 for IT equipment and furniture
  • Berlin Volunteer Fire Department – $6,225 for NOAA weather radios

 

Requests from White City Community Center, Cullman County Parks and Recreation, Good Hope Elementary School and the Cullman County Bosom Buddies Foundation were tabled for later consideration. Requests from Ray Buchmann, West Point High School FFA, Liberty Leadership Institute and West Point Elementary School were declined.

CCCDC members are:

  • Cherrie Haney – appointed by Sen. Garlan Gudger, R-Cullman
  • Joe Golden – appointed by Rep. Randall Shedd, R-Fairview
  • Josh Speakman – appointed by Rep. Scott Stadthagen, R-Hartselle
  • Champ Crocker, chairman – appointed by the legislative delegation

Crocker announced that Thursday night’s meeting was his last, as he has been appointed to the Cullman County Industrial Development Board. The seat occupied by former board member Bradley Williams will also be vacant. Williams was appointed executive director of Cullman County Economic Development. Two new members will be appointed to fill the vacancies.

Funding for CCCDC grants comes from taxes- Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in lieu of taxes and beer taxes. Grants are capped at $12,000 and are not issued for more than that amount except under extraordinary circumstances, which must be approved by the legislators.

The CCCDC strives to maintain a $100,000 reserve fund, as advised by the legislators.
