CULLMAN, Ala. – As their community service project for the school year, Carpentry students at the Cullman Area Technology Academy (CATA) built and donated an 8-foot by 8-foot storage building for the upcoming 2020 Wallace State Community College (WSCC) Scholarship Luncheon and Auction (online this year). The building features a metal roof, vinyl siding and a pressure-treated floor frame, and was built on pressure-treated skids for ease of loading and delivery.

In a note to The Tribune, CATA Construction Teacher Mike Burkett wrote, “Community service is one of the four ‘pillars’ holding up the Carpentry program at CATA, along with Competition, Curriculum and Collaboration. Each of these pillars is so important to the overall learning and positive life experiences that we try to provide all of our career tech students in Cullman County, and I am always so amazed and proud of how each of our Carpentry students get ‘pumped up’ about our annual building donation project to the WSCC Scholarship Auction.  It makes them feel good to know they are learning construction in a meaningful way and being able to participate in a ‘win-win-win’ situation.

“All students should have a valid purpose in their educational experiences, and by constructing and donating this storage building to the WSCC Scholarship Luncheon and Auction, it teaches them the importance of not only service to their community, but also the benefits of giving back to a cause that could maybe one day further their education at the college level.

“I encourage everyone to check out the auction items online and make a generous bid.  There are some really great items, including a wonderful storage building constructed by high school students at the Cullman Area Technology Academy.”
