FCCLA names Outstanding Members, Sweet Potato Cook-off winners

Cullman County Outstanding FCCLA Member winners (places 1-4) Madeline Mitchell, Bryce Williams, Callie Thornton and Alexus Wells

CULLMAN, Ala. – Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) students from all over Cullman County on Wednesday met at the All Steak Restaurant to compete for the Cullman County Outstanding FCCLA Member Award and in the FCCLA All-County Sweet Potato Cook-off.  Participating schools were Cold Springs High School, Cullman Area Technology Academy (CATA), Cullman High School, Good Hope High School, Hanceville High School, Vinemont High School and West Point High School.

Competing in the Cullman County Outstanding FCCLA Member contest were students from Cold Springs, CATA and West Point.  Cold Springs’ Madeline Mitchell took first place, followed by CATA’s Bryce Williams in second and West Point’s Callie Thornton and Alexus Wells in third and fourth, respectively. Mitchell will be awarded at the Cullman Farm-City Banquet in November.

The All-County FCCLA Sweet Potato Cook-off was sponsored by the Sweet Potato Association, Rhonda and George Burmeister, Clark Haynes, Kress Farms, Deborah and Edward Warnke, Doris Patterson and Pat Floyd.  The categories for the sweet potato cook-off were bread, casseroles, pies and desserts.

In the bread category, Good Hope’s Lily Chambers came in first, Cold Springs’ Lydia Twilley came in second, Vinemont’s Berkley Gable took third and Cullman’s Ella Kate Green took fourth.

In the casseroles category, Kaitlin Steele from Hanceville took first place, followed by Cullman’s Kate Rains in second, Vinemont’s Lilly Hudson in third and Cold Springs’ Kailey Coffee in fourth.

In the desserts category, first place went to CATA’s Bryce Williams, second to Cold Springs’ Madeline Mitchell, third to West Point’s Alexus Wells and fourth to Hanceville’s Lexie Hudson.  

In the pies category, CATA’s Caleb Knedlik placed first, Cold Springs’ Lacy Twilley placed second, and Vinemont’s Leslie Boren and Alex Terry placed third and fourth, respectively.

FCCLA Advisors present were Amie Veal from CATA, Stephanie Blair from Cold Springs, Carin Rains from Cullman, Amy Chambers from Hanceville and Tammy Whittle from Vinemont.
