BAILEYTON, Ala. – The Baileyton Town Council took the necessary steps Monday night to prepare for a likely increase in absentee voting in the upcoming Municipal Election in August, passing three resolutions.

The first resolution allows for hand counting of absentee ballots. The second names Town Clerk Pat Gilbert election and absentee election manager. (With Mayor Johnny Dyar running for re-election, he cannot serve as the election manager.) The third allows for additional compensation for extra work by the election manager.

Those interested in running for local office can declare their candidacy through July 21 at 5 p.m.

Said Gilbert, “They have two full weeks to come by and fill out their forms.”

Baileyton residents were updated on the Cullman County Cooperative’s announcement of Sprout Fiber Internet, which will bring high-speed internet to its customers, in phases, throughout Cullman County.

Glenn and Debra Miller, who have been circulating different petitions in an effort to obtain reliable internet services in rural Cullman County, addressed the council.

“As you can see, they’ve already started running fiber,” Glenn Miller said.

According to Debra Miller, the project will be done in phases, with Phase 1 to include Alabama Highway 69 and Fire Station Road.

She explained, “If you want to know if you are in Phase 1 or not, you can go on the Cullman County Co-Op website. You can go to the Sprout section and plug in your address and find out.”

A date has been set to help Baileyton residents complete the 2020 Census. Volunteers will be at the Baileyton Senior Center Saturday, July 25 from 10 a.m.-noon to assist people. Upon completion, residents’ names will be entered into a drawing for a 50-inch Smart TV.
