VINEMONT, Ala.- Vinemont Mayor Radginal “Reggie” Dodson announced Wednesday morning that he will seek a second term. This is the first election in which he will face opposition, as Vinemont Councilwoman Shirley Arnett announced her candidacy for the office Tuesday night. The Municipal Election will be Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2020.

A graduate of West Point High School, Dodson moved to Vinemont in 1965 with his wife Judy. Dodson joined the United States Navy in 1966 and served until 1970. Radginal and Judy recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.

Dodson has been mayor for the past four years and served on the council for four years prior. His wife Judy also served 16 years on the council prior to that.

Dodson said, “I have been to five ribbon cuttings since I have been mayor of businesses in the town. The biggest one now is the Shaddix Company. He has started his building, and we got a grant to redo Park Drive that is going to his business.”

Dodson said he would like one more term.

“I turn 75 this year and I will be 79 after one more term,” he said. “I’d like four more years as the mayor. Then someone else can be the mayor and I will bow out.”

If re-elected, Dodson said he hopes to add a new pavilion at the walking trail and find ways to better utilize the space around the town’s walking trail.

He said, “I’m up for suggestions of something to use to make more utility out of the walking trail but not interfere with those who choose to walk. I know this walking trail is utilized by many people on the north end of the county. I’d like that walking trail to be used as much as possible by those in and around the town.”

He said he would like to find activities that younger people might enjoy.

Dodson said he is also proud of the town’s ballpark and the revenue it generates for Vinemont by attracting local and out-of-town teams to the many tournaments and league play.

“This year has been up in the air (due to COVID-19), but the park is due to be reopened on June 19,” said Dodson.

He added, “The Town has no debt at all. We don’t owe anybody any money. For a town of 750 people, we are doing the best we possible could.”
