CULLMAN, Ala. – Local chain Frios Pops’ mission has always been to have “fresh, frozen fun,” with “pops with a purpose.” The Tribune spoke with franchise co-owner Kristy Keiffer on the store’s most recent mission: the “Create-a-Card” campaign, in which Frios will be collecting handmade cards to share encouragement with medical personnel, nursing home residents and others.

“We decided that, with our underlying motto being ‘pops with a purpose,’ we’re always looking for ways to bring that to our community,” said Keiffer. “With the uncertainties of everyone, we just wanted to be able to encourage someone and so late Saturday night I was thinking of how we could do that and I just came up with the idea of asking folks to bring cards, or if they didn’t bring them, maybe we could provide it for them. That way when they come in or come through, they could just sign them and leave a little note of encouragement and then they’ll gather them and send them out to people. It’s just an extension of our ‘pops with a purpose’ mantra.

“I think oftentimes with people, when there’s tons of uncertainty, people feel anxiety. Just one word of encouragement, one affirmation can make a difference for that person. So, I feel that if one person can do one thing for someone else, it’s just an encouragement. Definitely the medical community is feeling a tremendous burden to care for people and there’s the nursing home folks who were put on a pause from visitors, and that really tugged on my heart strings, too. Some of our very loyal customers have family that are in nursing homes and it’s just difficult for them. This campaign is a way to inspire people.”

Keiffer said the campaign will be happening indefinitely and cards can be given to anyone.

“People can drop them off for us and we can distribute for them or they could take one of ours and go and share it with someone, kind of pay it forward. As long as people are bringing the cards of encouragement, we’ll keep on doing it,” she said. “Every act of kindness can make a difference.”

Frios Pops store is open (drive-thru only) Sunday and Tuesday through Friday from 2-7 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
