Woodson, Martin lift No. 19 Lady Lions past Bishop State in ACCC Tournament quarterfinals

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Freshman Jiselle Woodson scored a career-high 25 points and Imari Martin flirted with a triple-double, propelling Wallace State’s 19th-ranked women’s basketball team to a 90-71 victory over Bishop State in Tuesday’s quarterfinal round at the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Tournament at Shelton State’s Umphrey Center.

Woodson went 10-of-18 from the field, including nailing four 3-pointers. She added six rebounds.

Martin, a sophomore from Hazel Green, finished with 21 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Lady Lions, while Kyra Williams scored 19 points. Jasmine Baker added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Martin had five 3-pointers and Williams had four. The team drained 14 3’s overall.

After a tight first half, Wallace State (23-5) pulled away from Bishop State early in the third quarter. The Lady Lions led 41-33 at the break and used a 14-3 spurt over a four-minute stretch in the third to sustain a 55-36 cushion.

Woodson scored nine consecutive points for Wallace State during that deciding run. 

Wallace State led 64-49 at the end of three stanzas and by as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Tawana Nevels finished with six points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

Valerie Samuel led Bishop State with 16 points.

Wallace State’s eight-point lead at the half was the largest cushion before intermission. The first half featured three ties and three lead changes.

Wallace State will play the Chattahoochee Valley-Lawson State winner on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the ACCC semis.

Both Wallace State tennis teams are off to strong conference starts.

The Wallace State men’s team is 5-2 overall, earning conference wins against Marion Military Institute and Coastal Alabama-South.

The Lions blanked the Sun Chiefs, 9-0, on Feb. 28.

Florent Sauvage (6-3, 6-0), Will Brackin (6-1, 6-0), Zach Mastin (5-7, 6-1, 10-2), Gage Anderson (6-0, 6-1), Hudson Thompson (6-2, 6-1) and Luke Moellering (6-3, 6-1) each earned singles victories for Wallace State.

Wallace State also swept doubles action. Sebastian Arce and Brackin prevailed 8-1. Mastin and Thompson won 8-4 and Anderson and Sauvage (8-1) completed the sweep.

The men also defeated Itawamba CC recently, winning 7-2.

Sauvage (6-1, 6-1), Mastin (4-6, 6-2, 6-0), Anderson (6-1, 6-0) and Thompson (6-2, 6-0) had singles win against the Indians. The Lions swept doubles action.

Wallace State’s women’s team notched conference victories in consecutive days against Coastal Alabama (5-4) and Central Alabama (9-0). 

In the match versus Coastal Alabama, Nicole Barron (6-0, 6-2), Anna Knepper (6-2, 6-3) and Breanna Vann (6-3, 4-6, 6-3) had singles victories for Wallace State.

In doubles, Barron and Haley Putman prevailed 8-2 for the Lady Lions, while Crissy Cruz and Vann won 8-1.

Wallace State’s women won every match against the Lady Trojans.

Barron, Putman, Cruz, Knepper and Tara Trammel notched singles wins for the Lady Lions.

Barron and Putman, Cruz and Alex Dugger and Knepper and Trammel teamed up for doubles wins.

Both Wallace State tennis teams travel to Mobile this weekend for the Mobile Invitational.

Wallace State softball

Wallace State softball’s doubleheader vs. Chattanooga State on Tuesday was postponed and Thursday’s doubleheader vs. Coastal Alabama-North has been moved to Friday, March 6, at 11 a.m. at Bobby McCracken Stadium.

Wallace State (9-5) enters Friday’s doubleheader on a three-game winning streak after sweeping a Feb. 27 doubleheader against Daytona State College, outscoring the Falcons 30-0. The Lions won 24-0 and 8-0.

Wallace State slugged four homers and tossed a no-hitter in the 24-0 triumph.

Erin Chambliss blasted a pair of home runs and finished with seven RBIs and Olivia Ball and Madisen Adams each added a homer. Ball had three RBIs and Adams had a pair.

Andrea Harbin finished with a pair of singles and three RBIs, Katelyn Williams had two RBIs and Macy Anderson doubled and had two RBIs.

Haylee Folds and Madison Sanders combined for a five-inning no-hitter, striking out eight.

In the 8-0 win, sophomore Chaney Phillips cranked a home run and finished with three RBIs.

Harbin added three more hits and an RBI, Chambliss had a pair of hits, including a double, and an RBI. Brantly Bonds added an RBI.

Josie Thompson pitched a three-hit shutout, recording six strikeouts.

Wallace State men’s basketball finishes season 16-15

Wallace State’s men basketball team had its season end in the ACCC play-in round, falling 112-85 to Coastal Alabama-North.

The Lions closed the season with a 16-15 record.

Sophomore Eugene Leonard led the Lions in the loss with 24 points and McLeon Charles had 22 points and five rebounds off the bench. Juwan Johnson finished with 12 points and eight points and Kuran Garner contributed 10 points.

Garner led the team in scoring, averaging 12.7 points per game, while Johnson poured in 12.1 points.

Sophomore Kendall Cotner set a school record with 111 blocks and added a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game.

Sophomores on this season’s roster were Charles, Johnson, Kendrick Foster, Markise Davis and Christopher Sampson.
