Obituary: Melvin Douglas Foster

Melvin Douglas Foster, 81, of Vinemont, Alabama passed away Sunday March 1, 2020 at the VA Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. He was born Jan. 9, 1939 in Atlanta, Georgia.

He served our country in the Coast Guard, where he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer U.S.C.G./ C.G.R. in 1999. He also served the City of Birmingham as a police officer for 35 years.

Mr. Foster is survived by daughters Teresa (Rodney) Looney and Angie (Brett) Robbins; sons Frank (Angie) Foster and James “Cleo” Higgins; sister Patricia (Ernie) Shields; brother Johnny (Shirley) Foster; and grandchildren John and Josh Looney, Caleb (Ashley) Foster, and Jonnie Licklider.

Mr. Foster was preceded in death by his parents John and Kathryn (Lindsey) Foster.

A Coast Guard military honor service for Mr. Foster will be held Friday, March 6, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, AL 35115.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Foster’s memory may be made to St Paul’s Building Fund, 513 Fourth Ave. SE. Cullman, Alabama 35055.
