LYNN – It was the Meek Tigers versus the Lynn Bears Friday night as the teams, both 2-0, opened region play.
Lynn won the opening toss, starting on its own 25 and went three-and-out.
Meek took over ton its 41, but on the first play threw an interception, giving the ball back to the Bears, who started on their own 37-yard line. John Mark Abercrombie fired the ball downfield to Jordan Davis for a 63-yard touchdown pass; with 08: 12 in the first, Lynn was up 7-0.
Meek went three-and-out on a couple of bad snaps to the quarterback and Lynn got the ball right back.
The Bears started from their own 49-yard line and ran the ball up the middle. Davis broke free for a 46-yard run, setting up a first-and-goal from the 1-yard line. Noah Jackson ran it in, and Lynn went up 14-0 with 4:33 in the first.
The Tigers continued to struggle and the first quarter ended with Lynn at 14, Meek 0.
After putting together a good drive, Lynn settled for a punt, giving the Tigers the ball. Meek put together a drive of its own, ending with a pass from Payton Key to Luke Sherer for a 19-yard touchdown pass. The Tigers finally got on the board, and the score was 14-6 with 5:40 left in the second.
The Bears punted, giving the Tigers the ball on the 35, but Meek fumbled the ball, giving it back to Lynn on the 33. The Bears moved the ball down the field, but came up short on fourth-and-6, when a Jackson’s pass to Delay wasn’t enough. The half ended at Lynn 14, Meek 6.
Meek started off the third with a punt, and Lynn started on its own 44-yard line, driving down the field with a 38-yard pass from Cam Balby to Micah Cagle, setting up a 3-yard touchdown run by Jackson. It was Lynn 21, Meek 6 with 7:57 left in the third quarter.
Meek went three-and-out, the Bears got the ball back, but they ended up throwing an interception.
Meek moved the ball down field, but a bad snap cost the Tigers good field position and they turned the ball over on downs at the 23-yard line.
Lynn came up short on fourth down, giving Meek the ball at the 18-yard line, but the Bears’ defense was too much for the Tigers, and the third ended at Lynn 21, Meek 6.
Early in the fourth quarter, Meek got the ball on its 49 and Abercrombie rushed for a 51-yard TD, making the score Lynn 21, Meek 12.
Lynn answered with a 59-yard drive that ended on an 8-yard rush by Jordan Davis to put Lynn up 28-12 with 6:14 left in the game.
A couple of non-productive possessions ended the game.
Final score: Lynn 28, Meek 12. Lynn improves to 3-0 and 1-0 in region play. Meek falls to 2-1 and 0-1 in region play.
Meek's head coach David Norwood said he was proud of what his team did Friday night, saying a few bad plays turned the momentum of the game around. Norwood said this was the first time the Tigers had problems snapping the ball this season.
