Wallace State sophomore Jesse Scott was named the ACCC Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday after registering 13 strikeouts in a 1-0 win over Marion Military Institute.
HANCEVILLE – Wallace State’s baseball team won its third consecutive conference series over the weekend, winning three games against Marion Military Institute.
The Lions (30-6, 10-2 Alabama Community College Conference) opened the series with a pair of wins at James C. Bailey Stadium on Friday and earned the series win with a split at Marion Military on Sunday.
Lefty Jesse Scott set the tone in the series opener by tossing a two-hit gem in a 1-0 win. The sophomore from Cullman struck out 13 batters and improved to 3-0 on the season.
Scott has recorded 64 strikeouts this season – the second-best mark in the ACCC and was named the ACCC Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
Wallace State plated its lone run in the third inning on a Dalton Cobb RBI.
Dalton Sinquefield had a double in the opener and Austin Triplett, Cole Collins, Justin Henle, Palmer Ford and Billy Reed each added a single.
Wallace State won the second game of the doubleheader, 9-2.
Freshman Kevin Bryant homered and finished with three RBIs; Sinquefield had two hits, including a double, an RBI and scored two runs; Billy Reed finished with two hits, including a double, and an RBI; and Palmer Ford had a pair of hits, an RBI and scored.
Heath Haskins went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, Jonathan Smith had a single, Zach Gipson doubled and scored and Cole Collins scored two runs.
Seth McWaters (3-0) was the winning pitcher. He allowed one run on four hits over five innings, striking out four. Tanner Rusk and Weston Bonner each pitched an inning out of the bullpen.
Wallace State dropped the first game at Marion Military Institute on Sunday, losing 7-6.
Haskins finished 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs for Wallace State, while Smith added a single and two RBIs. Collins added a single and scored a run, Kolby Robinson had an RBI and Ford scored two runs.
Freshman Blake Rivera continued his magical season in series finale, throwing four shutout innings and lowering his ERA to 0.96. Rivera (7-0) yielded two hits and struck out four in a 4-1 victory.
Braxton Light pitched the final three innings, surrendering one run on two hits and striking out three.
Maison Goodwin finished with a pair of hits for Wallace State, Collins went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, Sinquefield and Cobb each finished with a double and two RBIs, and Ford and Triplett each added a double to the offensive attack.
Offensively, Sinquefield leads the ACCC with 44 RBIs and 16 doubles. He is tied for third with six home runs.
For those Wallace State hitters with at least 50 at bats, Sinquefield (.381), Goodwin (.348), Collins (.331), Reed (.327), Cobb (.321), Robinson (.311) and Triplett (.306) are all hitting above .300 this season.
Meanwhile, the pitching staff has a conference-best 2.51 team ERA with Rivera, Blake Schilleci, Light, Scott, McWaters and Peyton Hayes each throwing at least 20 innings and sporting ERA’s under 3.00.
Wallace State hits the road Thursday for a doubleheader at rival Shelton State. The Lions return home on Saturday at 2 p.m. to wrap up the series vs. the Bucs.
