The newly upgraded game room in the Colony Educational Complex, seen in this photo from August, will be open for area children over the Christmas break.

COLONY – The Town of Colony is planning something special for its kids and those of the surrounding area.  On Dec. 19, the Parks and Recreation Committee will open a game room at the town's Educational Complex behind the town hall, as well as the Community Center gymnasium at Vivian B. Allen Park.  Mayor Donnis Leeth can hardly wait to see the first children and youth come through the doors.

He said, "I'm excited to see these kids' faces when they see what we've got out there."

The game room will feature two of each of the following recreational equipment:

  • Foosball tables
  • Air Hockey tables
  • 9-foot Shuffleboard tables
  • Electronic Dart boards
  • Table Tennis (Ping Pong) tables

This is a new thing for the Colony Town Council, and the game room and gym are opening on a trial basis for the Christmas season, and could lead to expanded usage and recreational offerings in the future.  Town Clerk Patricia Ponder says that they hope to get the facility's kitchen inspected and ready to serve food before students get out for summer vacation.

For now, the two facilities will be open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the following days:

  • Monday, Dec. 19
  • Wednesday, Dec. 21
  • Friday, Dec. 23
  • Tuesday, Dec. 27
  • Wednesday, Dec. 28
  • Thursday, Dec. 29

Kids coming to either facility must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian age 19 or older, who must remain onsite while their children are playing.

These facilities will not just be for Colony's kids.  Families from all surrounding areas are invited to come.  The council is not projecting numbers, but expects a healthy turnout at both venues from a good number of families with children in the town and surrounding communities.

Said Ponder, "Once the first child sees it and has fun, we won't have any problem in this area."

Town officials have been working toward building the Educational Complex into something special this year. Back in the summer, Colony restarted its summer camp program at the facility (http://www.cullmansense.com/articles/2016/07/15/colony-summer-program-makes-educational-complex-community-hub).
