HANCEVILLE – Wallace State Community College hosted the annual Cullman County Scholar’s Bowl tournament on Friday, with county high school and middle school teams converging on the Hanceville campus.

Every year, county schools, along with St. Bernard Prep and Cullman High School, compete against each other in battles of wits and reflexes during the fall semester. Then, just the county schools come together one more time in December for a final battle of the brains. Players on each team have to answer trivia questions, which can range from sports to literature to pop culture to calculus, before time runs out or a member from the other team answers.

From 10 a.m.-2 p.m., seven rounds of questions (each team played six rounds then had a break period) determined which teams and individuals would take home a tournament award. Following their undefeated season, West Point High School took first place in the tournament with a 6-0 record and a total of 2,040 points for the team. Good Hope came in second after losing only one game and Fairview took third place with a 4-2 record.

Along with team awards, individual players are awarded based on how many points they get during the tournament. With 400 points, Fairview senior Brett Hogan won first place. Landon Baloo from Vinemont took second place with 270 points and Will Parker from West Point came in third place just ten points behind. Holly Pond senior Heather Mann ended up securing fourth place with 240 points.

For some of these students, the county tournament marks the end of their academic competitions until the next year. Others, however, might choose to compete in other games throughout the school year or take part in their school's other academic teams, such as math team or, in previous years, science team.
