HANCEVILLE – Saturday’s Mud Creek Arts & Crafts Festival was on the top of the agenda at this week’s Hanceville City Council meeting.

Pam Reid, on behalf of the festival, requested the “partial closure of Highway 31 to Church Street (and) Senior Avenue, Blountsville Street to Stadium Street and any other adjoining streets for this Saturday, Oct. 15.” She continued, “They would need to be closed from 6 a.m.-4 p.m.” Reid also requested a $1,000 donation from the City of Hanceville to be used for “advertisement and other necessary items.”

All proceeds generated by the festival will go to Hanceville’s schools. Both requests were approved.

In new business, the council held a brief discussion about the discrepancy between storm shelter electricity costs. Councilman Charles Wilson said “The (shelter) at Commercial Street’s electric bill was $68.80, the one at Michelle Street was $31.12, and the one behind city hall (Bangor Avenue) was $65.27.” City Clerk Tania Wilcox told the council she will have someone “check and see about the generators,” at the storm shelters to see if that accounts for the discrepancy.

Hanceville Police Chief Bob Long reported, “Last month, we had seven felony reports, 41 misdemeanors, eight accidents, 20 arrests with warrants, 44 total arrests, 108 incident reports, 107 citations, 28 non-citations, and 2,012 calls in total.”

Bart Long, a representative of the Hanceville Fire Department followed suit, stating, “September was an extremely busy month for the fire department; (It was) one of the busiest months in recent years. We ran 119 calls total, 95 of those were medical calls and five of those being car accidents or other injury. We had two structure fires, both of those being mutual aid in Colony. We had five grass fires and two car fires.”

The Hanceville City Council meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 7 p.m. at Hanceville City Hall. The public is welcome to attend.
