CULLMAN – Perhaps seeking a respite from the week’s tragedies, Cullman families showed up Nesmith Park and had the opportunity to turn to animation as an escape on Friday night. Sponsored by Cullman City Parks and Recreation (CP&R), the free monthly drive-in movie selection was “Norm of the North.”

As lightning lit up the sky north of the park and a car rode through the park with a young girl on its hood, the movie started just prior to 9 p.m. and told the story of a polar bear seeking help to save his home from the greedy Mr. Greene. The developer seeks to build condos in Norm’s arctic home, leading Norm and his lemming friends to venture to New York City to save his beloved homeland.

Released in theaters in January, the film features the voices of Rob Schneider, of “Saturday Night Live” fame, and Ken Jeong, familiar from “The Hangover” trilogy and television’s “Dr. Ken.”

Maria Gonzalez brought her two young children and nephew to the park to enjoy a night at the movie. “We live right around the corner and it was good to get them out of the house. It doesn’t matter what the movie is about. They like cartoons.”

CP&R also sponsors the Dive-In movies held monthly at the Cullman Wellness and Aquatics Center on Thursday nights. The next movie night will feature “The Good Dinosaur” on July 21 with an 8:45 p.m. start time.
