BAILEYTON – A regular Baileyton Town Council meeting was held on Tuesday night, one day later than the council’s usual first Monday of the month meeting.

After all regular housekeeping items were taken care of, the council moved on to new business.

Mailers regarding Air Evac were discussed. Town Clerk Pat Gilbert was asked to contact Air Evac to see if the town needs to provide the company with the names and addresses of the citizens of Baileyton. Gilbert will also work with Air Evac to set up to three different meetings at the Baileyton Senior Center so that the seniors can add expanded coverage if needed.

In new business, citizen Audra Knop, owner of Pitter-Patter Academy, addressed the council regarding the Summit Road and Holly Pond Road intersection.

“We are right there at the intersection where the wrecks are happening. The last wreck was 30 feet from my fence. If I would have not moved the fence back when I purchased the daycare, that lady would have been in my fence with my babies. My heart went up into my throat because all I could see was the car flying in the air and my kids screaming and hollering. I’m here to ask you to either help us to get a study done to see if we can make it a 4-way stop, or ask you to put signs up saying ‘children at play’ or something to help me get them to slow down.”

After lengthy discussion, a motion was made to add signs, raise the speeding fines and have a patrol car on-site for a week. It was approved. Mayor Johnny Dyar and the rest of the council members stated that they are open to suggestions on how to fix the speeding problems near the daycare.

A request by Cornerstone Revival Center to reserve the park for softball and fireworks on the 4th of July was approved.

Dyar obtained a grant from the Cullman County Community Development Commission to build four new sheds for equipment. A motion was made to begin work on the sheds and to add them on to the maintenance building. It was approved.

The Alton Shedd Memorial Bridge fundraiser was a huge success. There was enough money raised at the senior center yard sale and car wash to complete the project.

There will be a singing on June 25 at the Baileyton Senior Center from 6-9 p.m. It will be a fundraiser for the center. Admission will be $2 per person and drinks and snacks will be available.

On June 23 at 9:30 a.m., Community Action Partnership of North Alabama will be at Baileyton Town Hall to speak with seniors ages 60 and over who need help with their cooling bills this summer. Those who wish to participate should bring monthly income documentation, Social Security card, current Alabama photo I.D., energy bill (utility and gas) and utility allowance/current lease for subsidized housing.

The Baileyton Town Council meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
