FAIRVIEW – The Fairview High School (FHS) Aggie Band completed a long, hot band camp prior to the start of school last week, fine-tuning what FHS Band Director Nathan Kilgo described as a new sound.
“We are adding some electronics to our front ensemble, which we haven't had in the past, so that's going to be a challenge for us, but exciting at the same time,” said Kilgo. “We're going to mic our mallet instruments and we're going to have electric guitar and electric synthesizer. So we have the mixing board, the amps and the speakers for that on the front. It allows the front ensemble to be heard a little more and balanced better with the rest of the band.”
Viewers of this year's halftime show are in for a “sweet” performance, said Kilgo.
“Our show theme is ‘Sugar and Spice,’ so (the show will feature) songs that have sugar or sweet in the title. We're also doing a Spice Girls song, so that’s where the spice comes from. 'Sweet Child of Mine' is our opener and 'Sweet Caroline', which is always a crowd favorite, and 'Wannabe' by the Spice Girls.”
The band learned most of its drill formations and songs during band camp, and is now in after-school rehearsals getting ready for next week's debut.
Kilgo said viewers will see the results of a lot of hard work that the kids put in during the summer, when a lot of people weren't out in the heat.
"Just a lot of great efforts from the students,” said Kilgo.
