CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman County officials and employees have earned statewide recognition for the third consecutive year after completing a month of workplace safety and risk-management activities.
The recognition followed the county’s participation in a National Safety Month initiative administered by County Risk Services in partnership with the Association of County Commissions of Alabama.
Employees completed weekly programs addressing workplace housekeeping, county road projects, property inspections and the safe operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.
Cullman County received additional recognition this year for expanding its efforts to include the safe use, inspection and handling of firearms and related equipment.
“In the hectic pace of life today, the contributions and commitment of officials and employees in county government are overlooked far too often,” ACCA Executive Director Sonny Brasfield said. “When we do that, we miss a thousand things, large and small, that they do each and every day to provide vital public services. I am proud to salute Cullman County for its continued investment in safety.”
Cullman County maintains a dedicated Safety and Loss Prevention Department. The county lists Delitha Marchman as director and Lisa Merritt as assistant director. The department also maintains the county’s safety policies and procedures for employees.
County Risk Services began operating Jan. 1, 2019, as the nonprofit, in-house administrator for the workers’ compensation, liability and property insurance funds established through ACCA. Its responsibilities include claims administration, underwriting, safety training and risk-management services for participating county governments and related agencies.
CRS also administers a Safety Incentive Discount Program intended to help participating counties establish basic safety standards, control risks and reduce losses. Because the insurance pools are self-funded, reducing claims and other losses can lower costs for participating governments.
National Safety Month is observed each June and was established by the National Safety Council in 1996. The 2026 observance marked the initiative’s 30th anniversary.
This year’s national themes included advancing workplace safety, preventing roadway crashes, supporting workers’ physical and mental well-being and reducing slips, trips and falls.
As part of its recognition, Cullman County will receive a complimentary employee breakfast funded by County Risk Services.
