Carol was called home to join her beloved husband of 67 years, Wendell and her parents Clyde and Louise Poole and brother Clyde Poole on Friday May 29, 2026.

Carol was born in Jackson, Mississippi where she spent her childhood. She was active in the Methodist church and played the piano throughout her life. She went to Millsaps College her freshman year of college and then transferred to Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University earning her bachelor’s degree in Sociology. Her senior year she met the love of her life, Wendell, on a blind date. He graduated a year before her and upon Carol’s graduation they were wed on April 21, 1956.

Wendell (Brigadier General, ret.) was in the U S Army which took them to many destinations overseas and throughout the United States. Carol’s favorite assignment was West Point, New York. Then they located to Huntsville, Alabama for his second career. Next was Melbourne, Florida and then back to Wendell’s home town of Cullman, Alabama and ultimately to Rome, Georgia to be closer to family. Carol worked many years as a social worker and earned her Master’s Degree along the way.

Carol was a very skilled seamstress. One of her most special garments was a christening gown that several of her grandchildren and great grandchildren were christened in. Afterwards she embroidered their names and dates of christening in the gown. She also made flower girl dresses for both of her sons’ weddings.

Carol was a true Auburn fan and Army West Point fan. During their time at West Point, they sponsored and mentored many cadets with many from the state of Alabama.

One evening at a special reception at the cadet library while she was waiting on Wendell a distinguished older gentlemen came up to her and asked if he could get her a drink (punch). She said yes. He returned with the drink and his wife, he introduced himself – Omar Bradley. Yes, General Omar Bradley. As Wendell arrived and General Bradley and his wife walked away, he asked her, “Do you know who that was?” Carol replied, “why yes, my friend General Bradley”. She never missed a chance to pull one over on Wendell. Carol loved to entertain and have family gatherings. She loved being a grandmother and cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren so very much.

Carol is survived by her children: Cristy Childs Edwards (Christopher) of Yellville, Arkansas, son Richard Childs (Cindy) of Rome, Georgia, and son Scott Childs (Eric) of Sydney, Australia; grandchildren, Cristy Edwards Mason, Katherine Childs Glazer, Michael Edwards (Grace), Andrew Edwards (April), Emily Childs, Courtney Childs, Margot Childs, and David Childs.
