CULLMAN, Ala. – Terri Pines is inviting women of all ages to gather for Ladies’ Mahjong Night on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 6 at its restaurant, The Veranda.

The event began after several members expressed interest in learning the game. Lindsey Eskew, who organizes the event, said she took an online class through Oh My Mahjong before purchasing several game sets and launching the first sessions in January 2025. About 16 women signed up for the initial class.

Since then, the gathering has become a monthly, beginner-friendly event. Eskew said she opted to teach the class herself after discovering that hiring a certified instructor would significantly increase participants’ costs. Each session costs $30 per person and includes a buffet-style dinner that varies by month and has featured options such as Chinese cuisine, fajitas and Greek dishes.

Participants may attend as a full table or sign up individually. Organizers pair newcomers with more experienced players, and beginners are often encouraged to observe before joining a game to become more comfortable with the rules.

Eskew said the event has helped foster community among women at Terri Pines, particularly in a space traditionally centered around golf, which tends to draw more male participation. The Mahjong nights attract women aged 20s to 60s.

Mahjong has seen a rise in popularity across the United States, with themed retreats and cruises dedicated to the game. Eskew said the monthly event allows local players to learn and enjoy the game close to home.

In addition to the monthly gathering, private and small-group lessons are available for those who prefer a more personalized introduction to the game. Ladies’ Mahjong Night is held at The Veranda at Terri Pines.
