CULLMAN, Ala. – A Cullman woman on Tuesday, Oct. 28, was tried and convicted of obstructing government operations and menacing. Virginia Sarah Roberts, 53, was sentenced to 18 months in jail.

This case stemmed from a May 11, 2025, incident in which Roberts used physical force to prevent a Cullman County Sheriff’s Office deputy from arresting another subject. She also pulled a shotgun and verbally threatened to shoot multiple deputies.

Court records state Roberts “interfered with an active investigation by using physical force to prevent a law enforcement officer from detaining the suspect of the investigation” and “attempted to use a shotgun to prevent the arrest of another after telling Deputy Nelson Hernandez she would shoot deputies.”

Cullman County District Judge Chad Floyd presided over the trial and sentenced Roberts to the maximum terms of 12 months and six months on the two charges.

“This situation could have ended a lot worse. The deputies involved in this case testified in court and displayed the highest professionalism,” said Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker. “I hope this outcome sends the message that anyone who fights and pulls guns on law enforcement is going to jail. I appreciate the work of my staff, especially ADA Mike Burleson, who tried this case.”
