CULLMAN, Ala. — Cullman was back home at Bearcat Arena for a varsity match against Brewer Monday night and after senior night ceremonies were finished, the ‘Cats battled the Patriots in a hard-fought, five set thriller. Before the opening serve, seniors Ainsley Cameron, Blakely Brannon and Jerriesue Godbee were recognized for the years they’ve spent in the Cullman volleyball program.

Brewer got off to a 5-2 lead early in the opening set and extended that lead to 13-7 as play went on. The Bearcats battled back and trimmed the lead to 15-12 at one point but they couldn’t complete the comeback, and the Patriots took the first set 25-18.

Cullman bounced back in the second set, jumping out to an early, 6-2 lead. Brewer was able to bring the lead down to 10-8 and eventually tie things up at 12 but the Bearcats finished the set strong, outscoring the Patriots 13-5 the rest of the way to secure a 25-17 win in the second set.

The third set was the tightest one yet. Cullman led 5-2 early but Brewer was able to trim the lead to 10-8 as the set went on. The Bearcats held a 14-13 lead midway through the set, but the score was knotted at 20 in the late stages. Neither team would give in down the stretch as they stayed within a point of each of other until the ‘Cats pulled ahead 28-27 and spiked the winning point over the net to take a hard-fought third set 29-27.

The next set was tied up at 5 early on but Brewer was able to move in front 9-6. The Patriots maintained a 16-11 lead midway through the set, but the Bearcats rallied to cut the lead down to 21-19. However, they couldn’t climb back any further than that and Brewer held on to take the fourth set 25-22.

In the match’s fifth and final set, the Patriots built an early, 4-1 lead but the Bearcats were able to tie things up at 5 as play went on. Cullman pulled ahead 9-6 midway through the set but before long we were all tied at 10. The score remained knotted at 12 down the stretch but Brewer was able to edge three of the final four points to take the set 15-13 and win a marathon match over Cullman 3-2.
