PREP FOOTBALL: Cold Springs, Gordo meet for region lead; Thursday games open October slate

CULLMAN, Ala. – A showdown for first place at Cold Springs, two Thursday road games and three first-time matchups highlight this week’s local high school football schedule.

Addison and Cold Springs enter October with a combined 11-0 record. The Bulldogs will host Belgreen, while the Eagles welcome Gordo in a matchup between the only teams still unbeaten in Class 2A, Region 5 play.

Cullman will travel to Jasper for the AHSAA TV Network Game of the Week on Thursday, Oct. 1, while West Point visits Brooks that night. The other eight local area games are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 2. Kickoffs are scheduled for 7 p.m.

Cullman at Jasper

Cullman (2-3, 1-2 Class 5A, Region 5) returns from its bye week looking to end a two-game losing streak when it visits Jasper (3-2, 2-1) at Ki-Ro/Gambrell Field.

The Bearcats last played Sept. 18, falling to Huffman 28-14. Jasper also had a bye last week after defeating Jackson-Olin 44-33.

Thursday will mark the schools’ 78th meeting. Cullman leads the series 38-37, with two ties, but Jasper won last year’s matchup 30-29.

West Point at Brooks

West Point (0-6, 0-3 Class 4A, Region 7) will travel to Killen on Thursday to face Brooks (3-3, 1-2).

The Warriors are seeking their first win after a 52-26 loss to Good Hope. Quarterback Max Patterson completed nine of 18 passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns in that game, connecting with JJ Minck and Bryant Moon for scores. Titan Thornton added a rushing touchdown, and Carter McAfee returned a kickoff 75 yards for another score.

West Point is 0-3 against Brooks. The Lions won the schools’ most recent meeting 41-30 in 2017.

Belgreen at Addison

Addison (6-0, 3-0 Class 1A, Region 7) will host Belgreen (2-3, 1-2) in the schools’ first meeting.

The Bulldogs defeated Oakman 43-0 last week for their fourth shutout of the season. Addison has outscored its first six opponents 294-13 and shares the region lead with Hackleburg and Red Bay, both also 3-0 in region play.

Quarterback Elijah Roberts passed for 186 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 103 yards and two scores against Oakman. Zane Smith added 111 combined rushing and receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Gordo at Cold Springs

Cold Springs (5-0, 3-0 Class 2A, Region 5) will put its unbeaten record on the line against Gordo (5-1, 3-0), with the winner taking sole possession of first place in the region.

The Eagles defeated Holly Pond 28-8 in their latest game. Cason Alexander scored on the opening drive, and Ethan Day added two touchdown runs as Cold Springs built a 21-0 lead through three quarters.

The schools have met only once. Cold Springs won that matchup 16-0 in 1993.

Brewer at Fairview

Fairview (3-2, 2-2 Class 4A, Region 8) returns from a bye week to host Brewer (2-4, 2-2).

The Aggies last played Sept. 18, defeating Sardis 41-2 to end a two-game losing streak. Friday’s matchup gives Fairview an opportunity to move ahead of Brewer in the region standings.

The all-time series is tied 14-14. Fairview won the most recent meeting 38-0 in 2023.

Sardis at Good Hope

Good Hope (4-1, 3-0 Class 4A, Region 8) will host Sardis (1-4, 1-2) in the schools’ first meeting.

The Raiders have won four straight since their season-opening 31-24 loss to Plainview. They scored a season-high 52 points in last week’s 52-26 victory at West Point.

Karson Hollis rushed for 104 yards in the win. Parker Johnson added 64 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground and also scored on a 61-yard trick play.

Good Hope enters Friday tied with Cherokee County and Scottsboro at 3-0 in region play.

Susan Moore at Hanceville

Hanceville (0-5, 0-3 Class 3A, Region 6) will return from its bye week to host Susan Moore (1-4, 0-3).

Both teams are seeking their first region victory. Hanceville last played Sept. 18, falling to Glencoe 50-0.

Hanceville trails the all-time series 2-7. Susan Moore won the schools’ last meeting 40-22 in 2017.

Holly Pond at Hokes Bluff

Holly Pond (2-3, 1-2 Class 3A, Region 6) will travel to Hokes Bluff (1-4, 1-2), with both teams looking to even their region records.

The Broncos are coming off a 28-8 loss to Cold Springs. Miguel Garcia rushed for 54 yards and scored Holly Pond’s touchdown, while Hunter Tolbert added 43 rushing yards.

Friday will be the schools’ first meeting in 60 years. Hokes Bluff won their only previous matchup 40-14 in 1966.

Waterloo at Meek

Meek (2-3, 1-2 Class 1A, Region 7) returns from a bye week to host Waterloo (1-4, 1-2).

The Tigers last played Sept. 18, falling to Addison 56-6. Waterloo enters after a 38-14 loss at Tharptown.

Meek has won all five previous meetings between the schools, including a 64-6 victory last season.

Etowah at Vinemont

Vinemont (4-2, 2-1 Class 3A, Region 6) will host Etowah (3-2, 3-0) in the schools’ first meeting.

The Eagles have won two straight, most recently defeating Appalachian 24-14. Vinemont built a 24-0 halftime lead before stopping Appalachian’s second-half comeback.

Caleb Slain opened the scoring with an 11-yard touchdown run. Lukas Ming caught a 20-yard touchdown pass, and Karson Arbet added a 1-yard scoring run before halftime.

Etowah enters tied with Oneonta for the region lead. A Vinemont victory would give the Eagles and Blue Devils matching 3-1 region records.
