
VINEMONT, Ala. — The Vinemont Lady Eagles hosted the J.B. Pennington Lady Tigers and the Corner Lady Yellow Jackets in a tri-match on Tuesday night. Vinemont swept J.B. Pennington in three straight sets in the first game, and the Lady Eagles knocked off the Lady Yellow Jackets in a three-set battle.
Vinemont 3 – J.B. Pennington 0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-19)
Vinemont got out to a 7-1 lead in the first set, and behind an ace from Litzy Flores and a pair of kills from Addison Holcomb and Arleigh Thomason, they stretched their lead to 14-2. Holcomb collected a kill and a point to make it 20-4, and Mabri Smith collected a kill to push their lead to 23-6. The Lady Eagles survived a late push by J.B. Pennington to take the first set 25-13.
The second set saw the Lady Tigers jump out to a quick 4-0 lead, but Vinemont scored the next five points, including a trio of aces by Natalie Foell, to take a 5-4 lead. It was close for most of the set. A point by Foell gave the Lady Eagles a 15-11 lead, but J.B. Pennington scored the next four points to tie things up at 15. Vinemont held a slim 17-16 lead, and they would take over after that, as Holcomb (point and a kill), Reagan Robinson (point and a kill), and Thomason (point) helped them stretch their lead to 24-16. The Lady Eagles would go on to take the second set 25-18.
J.B. Pennington got out to an early 6-2 lead in the third set, but kills by Robinson and Holcomb, along with an ace by Flores, tied it up at six. The Lady Tigers held a 9-6 lead, but Vinemont scored nine straight points, with five of those points coming from Alaina Sandlin in the ace section, as that gave them a 15-9 lead. A big run by J.B. Pennington, though, allowed them to tie things up at 18. Just like the end of the second set, the Lady Eagles finished things out strong, as Foell and Flores (ace), Thomason (two points), and Holcomb (point) helped them finish off the sweep of the Lady Tigers 25-19.
Vinemont 2 – Corner 1 (25-20, 19-25, 15-11)
The score was tied at two early in the first set, but Corner reeled off six straight points to grab an 8-2 lead. It was Vinemont’s turn to go on a run of their own, as they scored eight of the next nine points to take a 10-9 lead. The Lady Eagles widened their lead to 18-12 later in the set, but the Lady Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to three at 19-16. Another late run by Vinemont gave them a 24-17 lead, and they overcame a small run by Corner to take the first set 25-20.
Vinemont didn’t waste any time getting out to a quick lead in the second set. They scored seven of the first eight points to take an early 7-1 lead. They held a 12-7 lead, but Corner scored the next five points to tie things up at 12. The Lady Yellow Jackets would later take a 19-15 lead. The Lady Eagles cut it to 20-18, but they didn’t get any closer after that, as Corner pulled away late to take the second set 25-19.
It was a game of runs to start out the third and final set. Vinemont scored the first four points of the set to grab the early lead, and that was followed by four straight points from Corner to tie it up at four. The Lady Yellow Jackets went on a 4-2 run to take an 8-6 lead, but the Lady Eagles battled back to tie things up at nine. Corner took an 11-9 lead late in the set, but Vinemont took over after that, scoring the final six points to take the third and deciding set 15-11.
