CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman County People Against a Littered State (PALS) met July 22, at Cullman County Economic Development to report business and discuss volunteering, fair booth ideas and Beautification Awards.
First, the group provided updates on the Alabama Adopt-A-Mile Program. Alabama PALS provides Adopt-a-Mile signs for groups wanting to adopt a mile on all Alabama and U.S. highways and helps keep the miles clean. PALS provides bags and safety vests for adopted state and U.S. highways.
The group also discussed cleanups. They proposed removing Dumpsters that hold trash collected from cleanups and replacing them with designated drop-off and pick-up areas. PALS is looking for more volunteers to participate in roadside cleanups.
“Keeping our roadways clean is very important,” said Cullman County PALS President Cherrie Haney. “Litter is not only an eyesore, but it can contaminate drinking water.”
The members also decided to introduce new teachers to the Alabama Clean Campus Program. The Alabama Clean Campus Program is designed to involve schools across the state in litter control, beautification, recycling and clean-up efforts.
PALS offers supplies like bags and recycling boxes to enrolled schools at no cost. All schools registered with the Clean Campus Program can submit projects for the annual Statewide Clean Campus Competition. Awards are presented to the winning schools each year at the PALS Governor’s Awards luncheon in November, and Cullman County has seen lots of success at the competition.
There was also an exchange of ideas for a Cullman County PALS booth at this year’s Cullman County Fair and who will receive Beautification Awards. These awards celebrate local businesses and groups that help make the community a more pleasant place to live and work.
