CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman High School’s sports complex is due to receive a major upgrade soon.

Cullman City schools announced last week that in their June Board of Education meeting, the district approved a $500,000 dollar reallocation to support the City of Cullman’s renovation to the Cullman Tennis Complex located on Stadium Drive NE.

According to Cullman High’s tennis coach, Nathan Bates, the renovation will include a complete replacement of the six current courts, while adding two new ones, as well. In addition to updated lighting, a new tennis building will also be built, with the upgrades aiming to make the complex suited for school athletics, physical education activities, community programming and regional events.

“Our players and coaches are extremely excited about the renovation of the tennis facility. This project has been in the works for quite some time, and making it a reality required collaboration between the City of Cullman, Cullman Parks & Recreation, and Cullman City Schools. I believe this project is a great example of our school system and city government working together to provide the best possible opportunities and facilities for both our students and our community,” Bates said.

The announcement comes after a 2026 season that saw a surging Cullman High School tennis program under Bates make Sectionals in both the boys and girls division. The boys team finished as the sixth overall team in Class 6A, and finished the year 16-2 and as 6A, Section 7 runner-ups.

With a brand new facility, that momentum just picked up even more.

“This project is a game-changer for our tennis program. It will provide our team and community with a facility we can all take pride in. The addition of two courts creates opportunities to host events and tournaments that were not feasible with only six courts. From a day-to-day standpoint, the increased court space means fewer players per court during practice, allowing for more repetitions and more individualized development. It will also enable us to use traditional scoring formats during home matches, which further enhances the competitive experience and player growth,” said the Bearcats’ coach.

The timeline for the project is unclear at the moment, but Cullman High’s tennis teams will return to action in February of 2027.
