CULLMAN, Ala. – The North Alabama Agriplex is taking its Farm Kids Club off-site this month to explore spring blooms on a Wildflower Walk at Sportsman Lake Park.

The walk will take place Saturday, April 11, from 10-11:30 a.m. at the park’s Wildflower Garden. The event is designed as a hands-on nature walk for children in kindergarten and elementary grades, accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Agriplex Executive Director Rachel Dawsey said the walk will allow children to experience local wildflowers in their natural setting, particularly ephemeral blooms that appear briefly each spring before tree canopies fill out and block the sunlight.

During the walk, families will learn to identify native wildflowers and explore their roles in supporting pollinators and the ecosystem. The hands-on experiences will help children develop an appreciation for local plants and understand their importance.

“If they don’t know about them, they’re never going to miss them when they’re gone,” Dawsey said, noting that public spaces with visible spring wildflowers have become increasingly rare.

The program will also include creative and interactive activities, giving children the opportunity to design their own wildflower-inspired projects. Activities will be held in the garden’s outdoor classroom, a wooded deck area maintained by the Cullman County Master Gardeners.

Registration is available through the Agriplex website at www.Agriplex.org. The cost is $10 per child, with a maximum of $20 per family, and adults attend free. Families are encouraged to attend while the wildflowers are in bloom or to visit the garden on their own, as the area remains open to the public year-round.

Sportsman Lake Park is located at 1544 Sportsman Lake Road NW, Cullman.
