CULLMAN, Ala. – Court records made public on Wednesday, Nov. 26, allege that local attorney Sara Baker, 74, of Vinemont, tried to kill her husband, James Doyle Baker, by adding fentanyl to his food and drinks.
The criminal complaint alleges she: “Did, on or about September 1, 2025 through November 25, 2025, …. intentionally agree with one or more other persons to engage in conduct constituting the crime of murder (13A-6-2, Code of Alabama), and one or more of the conspirators committed an overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy, to-wit: ENGAGED ANOTHER PERSON TO PROVIDE FENTANYL TO CAUSE THE DEATH OF JAMES DOYLE BAKER.”
It also alleges that, on three separate occasions (Sept. 4, Sept. 12 and Sept. 20), Baker “…with the intent to commit the crime of murder (13A-6-2, Code of Alabama), attempt to intentionally cause the death of another person, to-wit: JAMES DOYLE BAKER, BY PUTTING A SUBSTANCE SHE BELIEVED TO BE FENTANYL IN HIS FOOD AND/OR DRINK, in violation of 13A-4-2, Code of Alabama.”

CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Attorney Sara Baker was arrested Tuesday, Nov. 25, charged with conspiracy to commit murder, three counts of attempted murder, unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, second-degree elder abuse, four counts of solicitation to commit a controlled substance crime and second-degree domestic violence.
The Cullman Police Department said Baker was transported to the Cullman County Detention Center, where she remains in custody pending bond.
In a media release, the department said, “The Cullman Police Department would like to extend its appreciation to District Attorney Champ Crocker and the Cullman County District Attorney’s Office, as well as the FBI North Alabama Violent Crimes Task Force and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force for their assistance in this case. This is all the information available at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.”
The Cullman Police Department had no comments or additional details Tuesday night.
