CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Christkindlmarkt is open for the season, with officials cutting the ribbon to kick of the holiday festivities on Thursday, Nov. 20, at Depot Park. This will be the market’s longest run yet, and the City of Cullman and Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism are anticipating an estimated $40 million in economic impact.

This year’s market continues to highlight the strong partnership between local businesses, the City, sponsors and volunteers. Nearly 75% of vendor huts are occupied by local businesses, many of which temporarily expanded operations to participate in the 23-day market. Organizers credit that commitment, along with behind-the-scenes work by City staff and contractors, for shaping the event into a major regional and national attraction.

A centerpiece of the market is the Weihnachtspyramide, a traditional German Christmas season decoration known in English as a “Christmas pyramid.” It debuted in Cullman in 2019 as the largest Christmas pyramid in the U.S. and was built by German company Erzgebirgiisehe Holzkunst Gahlenz in Gahlenz. Representatives from the company traveled to Cullman in 2019 to install the 30-foot-tall symbol of Cullman’s German heritage.

The pyramid represents one of several authentic elements inspired by the City’s research trips to German holiday markets. Visitors will also find a two-story carousel modeled after the one in Frankfurt, a Ferris wheel matching those in Erfurt and fire pits reminiscent of Berlin’s traditional markets.

The Christkindlmarkt has also begun a charitable initiative this year. Vendors will invite customers to round up purchases by $1, $5 or $10, with all proceeds supporting children-focused charities. Organizers anticipate raising at least $100,000, with the potential to exceed $300,000 as attendance grows.

Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs, the Cullman City Council and many others were recognized for their significant roles and contributions in preparing the venue and its operations. It was mentioned that last year’s event brought crowds from across the country, from New York to Nevada, boosting business for hotels, restaurants and local shops.

Inspired by Germany’s centuries-old Christmas markets, the Cullman Christkindlmarkt features illuminated wooden huts, handcrafted goods, traditional foods and a full season of entertainment. Guests can enjoy authentic German sausages, chimney cakes, raclette, imported chocolates and candies, as well as crafts, ornaments, textiles, smokers, nutcrackers and more.

The market also offers ice skating, a Ferris wheel, a double-decker carousel, alpine slides, live music, acrobatic shows, troubadours and children’s activities at Kinderplatz and Santa’s Village, along with special appearances from Santa, Mrs. Claus, the Christkindl Express and so much more.
