CULLMAN, Ala. – Two men were arrested in Cullman recently in connection with a theft in Marshall County.
Cullman Police Department officers on June 25, were dispatched to the north Cullman Walmart parking lot in response to a report of a suspicious trailer that had been left unattended. The trailer was carrying a John Deere tractor.
Chief Joey Duncan said that upon arrival, officers began an investigation and determined that the trailer had been dropped off by two unidentified white males.
“Surveillance footage from the area provided images of the individuals and the vehicle used to tow the trailer,” Duncan said. “The vehicle was identified as an early 2000s model Jeep Cherokee, notable for its black hood and a temporary ‘Etowah’ drive-off tag.”
Duncan said officers conducted a VIN check on the trailer, which confirmed it had been reported stolen from a residence in Marshall County on June 22, 2025. The theft involved both the trailer and a John Deere tractor.
“During the investigation, officers received information indicating that a phone call had been made by a male individual stating he intended to return and retrieve the trailer after work,” Duncan said. “At that point, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division was contacted and responded to the scene to assist. Cullman Police investigators established surveillance in the area in anticipation of the suspects’ return. Shortly thereafter, Officer (Justin) Turner located the suspect vehicle, an inoperable Jeep Cherokee, disabled along the interstate. The vehicle’s two occupants were identified as Mr. Kenneth Elliot and Mr. Matthew Allen.”
CPD Investigator Nick Watkins, along with an investigator from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the location and interviewed the individuals, Duncan shared.
“Following the investigation, it was determined that Mr. Elliot and Mr. Allen were responsible for the theft of the trailer and tractor from the Marshall County residence and for leaving the stolen items at Walmart on Highway 157,” Duncan said.
Both suspects were taken into custody on behalf of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office. Cullman Police officers transported the individuals to a designated location where they were transferred to the custody of a Marshall County deputy. The stolen trailer and tractor were successfully recovered and returned to the rightful owner.
“I want to take this opportunity to express how incredibly proud I am of the exceptional work carried out by our officers, investigators and the local businesses who contributed to this case,” Duncan said. “Their professionalism, dedication and collaborative effort led to the swift recovery of stolen property and the apprehension of those responsible. This incident highlights the strength of our partnerships within the community and the commitment of our department to protecting the citizens we serve.”
