Jerry Mack Waters, a beloved father and grandfather and devoted husband, passed away on June 10, 2025, at the age of 74. A lifelong resident of Cullman, Jerry was born on September 9, 1950, to parents Madie and Hosie Waters.
A graduate of Cullman High School, Jerry pursued higher education at Jacksonville State University, where he met the love of his life, Susan Williams Waters, and the two shared nearly 50 years of marriage before she passed away in 2021.
He served his country in the United States Army Alabama National Guard as a Communications Specialist and Helicopter Crew Chief, demonstrating the same dedication and work ethic that he would carry throughout his life.
An entrepreneur at heart, Jerry was never one to sit still, always dreaming, creating, and connecting with people wherever he went. He owned and operated several successful businesses in Cullman for over 35 years. His first venture, Burger Chef, opened in 1978 and later became J. Mack’s Hamburgers. He also brought the first Taco Bell franchise to Cullman and went on to launch J. Mack’s Sporting Goods and Batting Cages.
In addition to his business experience, Jerry was involved in several civic organizations such as the Cullman Kiwanis and Lion Clubs as well as his church. Coaching was one of his greatest joys and he spent many years coaching youth basketball, softball and baseball and later served as Head Softball Coach at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville from 1990-1992.
His love for sports, especially his devotion to Auburn University athletics, was infectious. Over his lifetime, Jerry wasn’t afraid to try new things, and he was a man of many hobbies. From learning to play the banjo to getting his pilot’s license to racing go-carts to woodworking and photography, his zest for life will never be forgotten. He enjoyed music of all genres and loved to share his favorite songs with his family and friends.
Jerry was most at home surrounded by people — especially his family. He was a proud and loving father to his three children and their spouses, and was always committed to supporting and helping his children pursue their interests with confidence. He was most proud to be known as “Poppy” to his seven grandchildren. Jerry tried to make every minute count with his grandchildren and tried to be present for all the special moments in their lives.
Jerry will be most remembered for his love of life, his friendly disposition, sense of humor, and his incredible heart for people. “J.Mack” will be deeply missed by all those that knew and loved him.
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31
