BREMEN, Ala. – Stony Lonesome OHV Park held its annual 5K Sasquatch Mud Run this past Saturday, May 10. Launched initially as a basic 5K mud run, the event evolved to include the now-iconic Sasquatch mascot, whom Park Manager Tyler Lindsey played himself to kick off the activities.
“I was actually dressed as Sasquatch this morning. I don’t run the 5K, but I get everyone started. The kids love it!” he said.
The event includes two tracks. A 5K obstacle course for more competitive runners and a 1-mile fun run to accommodate more families with young children.
“You’ll see little ones out there with their parents, just getting muddy and having fun,” Lindsey said. “It’s sweet. It gives families something different to do together outdoors.”
Lindsey said the event has been running for about eight or nine years, with proceeds helping support Cullman County Parks and Recreation by funding staff, maintenance and various outdoor programs.
“We’re careful with taxpayer dollars because we’re taxpayers, too,” he said. “It’s important for the community to see us out here, involved.”
The setup and cleanup for the event take over two weeks, but despite the hard work, Lindsey said, he loves the event and his job.
“It’s work, but I’ve been here 15 years. Stony Lonesome is home,” he said. “The people who come here are hardworking, family-oriented folks who know how to live life.”
Stony Lonesome is open Friday through Monday. The 1,456-acre-plus park features trails for ATVs, rock crawlers, dirt bikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, hikers, pedestrians and more. Get more info at www.stonylonesomeohv.us.
