
FLORENCE, Ala. – After splitting its first two North Regional matchups on Tuesday, Good Hope returned to the field Wednesday for an elimination game against Cordova. The score was knotted at 2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning and the Blue Devils walked it off to defeat the Raiders 3-2, bringing their season to an end. Meanwhile at the 1A East Regional in Albertville, the Meek Tigers and Addison Bulldogs were continuing their postseason runs. Meek handled Jacksonville Christian 15-2 in its first game of the day, but Addison fell into the losers’ bracket with a 9-2 loss to Spring Garden. The Bulldogs faced Appalachian in an elimination game next and their season came to an end with a 19-7 loss to the Eagles. The Tigers dropped their next game with Ider 13-1 and will back on the field Thursday at 9 a.m. to play Appalachian.
Cordova 3 – Good Hope 2 (Wednesday)
Both teams got off to a slow start in this one but after a pair of scoreless innings, the Raiders took the lead in the top of the third. Brooklyn Lambert led off the inning with a single and after a sacrifice bunt from Maggie O’Neil moved her to second base, Lizzy Steed followed with a single that allowed Lambert to score and make it 1-0. Later in the inning, another single from Campbell Koch drove in Steed and gave Good Hope a 2-0 lead going into the fourth.
Cordova loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth and tied the game with a 2-run single. The Raiders’ defense came up with a double play on the next pitch to get out of the inning with any further damage. Good Hope loaded the bases in the top of the sixth but was unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunity and the game remained tied at 2 going into the final frame. The Raiders made two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, but a pair of Blue Devils were able to reach base and Cordova walked it off with a single to claim a 3-2 win and bring Good Hope’s season to an end.
Molly Benefield pitched 6.2 innings, allowing six hits, no earned runs and striking out four. Steed and Kylee Smith each posted a pair of hits in the loss. Koch finished with a hit and an RBI and Lambert, Natalie Miller, Addyson Burgess and Haley Lay each added a hit as well.
Meek 15 – Jacksonville Christian 2 (East Regional)
The Thunder led off the top of the first with a solo home run to take an early lead but they didn’t hold onto it for long. In the bottom half of the first, an RBI double from Anna Collins drove in Camryn Daughtery to tie the game at 1. After Sadi Farley drew a walk, Kadence Cox lined a 2-run single into center field to put the Tigers in front 3-1 and two pitches later, an RBI single from Amori Miles made it a 4-1 game going into the second.
An RBI triple off the bat of Molli Sandlin gave Meek a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the second and Collins added another RBI single to make it 6-1. Back to back singles from Farley and Cox loaded the bases and a 2-run single from Miles put the Tigers ahead 8-1 going into the third. RBI singles from Sandlin and Collins extended the lead to 10-1 in the bottom of the third and a sacrifice fly from Farley drove in Sandlin to make it 11-1. Miles capped the inning with an RBI double to make it a 12-1 game going into the fourth.
Meek strung together four hits to plate three more runs in the bottom of the fourth and wrapped up a 15-2 win in the top of the fifth inning.
Collins, Miles and Sandlin each recorded three hits and three RBIs in the win. Daughtery (one RBI), Farley (two RBIs) and Cox (two RBIs) each posted a pair of hits as well.
Ider 13 – Meek 1 (East Regional)
Ider jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and hits were hard to come by for the Tigers in this one. The Hornets added another run in the second to make it 3-0 and after a pair of scoreless innings, Ider tacked on three more runs in the fifth to pull ahead 6-0. The Hornets plated two more runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh to make it a 13-0 game.
Singles from Camryn Daughtery and Sadi Farley gave the Tigers a pair of runners in the bottom of the seventh and Kadence Cox drew a walk to load the bases. Anna Collins scored on a fielder’s choice to trim the lead to 13-1 but they couldn’t chip away any more than that and the Tigers fell to the Hornets 13-1.
Daughtery, Farley and Amori Miles (one RBI) each recorded a hit in the loss.
Spring Garden 9 – Addison 2 (East Regional)
Spring Garden hit a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. The Lady Panthers added two more runs in their next at-bats to stretch their lead to 4-0, and an RBI triple in the bottom of the third made it 5-0. Addison got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. Annabeth Powell hit a leadoff triple and stole home three pitches later to cut it to 5-1. Spring Garden put up three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-1 lead.
Addison put a pair of runners on bases on a pair of errors to lead off the top of the fifth. Two outs later, Mackenzie Carter hit the first pitch she saw into right field for an RBI single to trim the deficit to 8-2. The Lady Panthers made it 9-2 in their half on a two-out RBI triple. Addison put a pair of runners on the corners with one out in the top of the seventh, but they couldn’t get anything going after that, and Spring Garden defeated the Lady Bulldogs 9-2.
Carter finished with a pair of hits and an RBI for Addison, while Powell and Katie Barrett each chipped in with a hit of their own in the loss.
Appalachian 19 – Addison 7 (East Regional)
Both teams traded runs to start out the game. A pair of RBI singles by Appalachian gave them a 2-0 lead in their opening at-bats. Annabeth Powell hit a two-out triple for Addison, then Kaycie Wood drew a walk to put runners on the corners. An error on the next pitch allowed Powell to score to cut it to 2-1, then Savannah Miller’s RBI single plated Wood to tie things up at two. The Lady Eagles put up two runs in the second and third innings to break the tie and take a 6-2 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs cut into the deficit in their next at-bats. Lainey Evans and Powell hit back-to-back one-out singles, and one out later, Miller drove them both in on a two-run single up the middle to trim the deficit to 6-4. Miller later scored on an error to make it a one-run game. Appalachian broke the game wide open in the top of the fourth. They batted around and ended up scoring eight runs to put them ahead 14-5. The Lady Eagles added two more runs in the fifth to take a 16-5 lead. Miller and Katie Barrett each scored on an error in the Lady Bulldog half of the fifth to cut it to 16-7, but Appalachian scored three more times in the top of the sixth inning to give them a 19-7 lead. Addison couldn’t get a rally going in their half of the inning and their season came to an end at the hands of the Lady Eagles 19-7.
Miller led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with a pair of hits and three RBIs. Powell and Barrett each added a pair of hits, while Mackenzie Carter, Lainey Evans, Summer Evans and Preslei Atkins all chipped in with a hit of their own in the loss.
