It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rufus Elwood Speakman, age 94, of Cullman, Alabama, who left this world on August 24, 2026. Rufus died at home peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.
Rufus was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather whose life reflected steady devotion and quiet strength. Hard-working and resilient through the years, he led by example and consistently placed God first. To know Rufus was to love him—his warmth, ready smile, and gentle sense of humor stayed with those who had the privilege of sharing life with him. And while his faith and family were foremost, few things brought him as much joy as Alabama football.
Rufus is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Marjorie Speakman; his son, Stanley (Annie) Speakman; and four grandchildren, Sheri Speakman, Pam (Chris) Uptain, Patsy (Robert) Stewart, and Wade Speakman. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and seventeen great-great-grandchildren.
Rufus was preceded in death by his son, Philip Speakman, as well as his mother, father, and sisters.
Visitation will be held at Moss-Service Funeral Home, 1901 2nd Ave North West, Cullman, AL 35055, on August 28, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
A celebration of life funeral service will follow at Moss-Service Funeral Home on August 28, 2026, at 11 a.m.
A graveside committal service will be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 2245 Co Rd 1242, Vinemont, AL 35179, on August 28, 2026, from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m.
