CULLMAN, Ala. – Understanding where candidates’ funding comes from and where it goes can help voters understand what candidates believe and which causes they support, what kinds of people they represent and, in some cases, who might be expecting representation from them.
In 2020, The Tribune began the “Who’s paying whom” series, publishing the financial records of candidates. By the way, The Tribune is not uncovering secrets; candidates are required to file finance reports with the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office throughout their active campaigns, and those reports are freely available to the public through the Office’s elections website, fcpa.alabamavotes.gov. The Tribune used those reports to create the following lists of major donors and amounts.
For the Alabama House of Representatives District 11 Special Election, candidates formed their campaign committees in March, and have been required to report contributions and expenditures from March until the beginning of August. While candidates might receive many small contributions from individuals, usually friends or business associates, the following lists focus on contributions of $500 or more. Multiple contributions from a single source are totaled for the list; if small contributions from a single source (one business or political action committee (PAC), or individual contributions by a married couple) add up to $500 or more, they are included. All expenditures claimed by the candidates are listed. Lists were current as of April 25, 2025, the end of the last reporting period.
Names of contributors are taken directly from the Alabama Secretary of State’s website, and may contain spelling errors if they were misspelled in the reports. Where the name of a PAC or other group does not make evident the nature of the group, The Tribune offered brief definitions based on information in the Alabama Secretary of State’s database.
