TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A host of former Alabama players made an impact in the Philadelphia Eagles’ 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday night in New Orleans.
Alabama was represented by seven players on the Eagles’ roster, including Landon Dickerson, Jalen Hurts, Cameron Latu, Eli Ricks, DeVonta Smith, Tyler Steen and Byron Young.
The group became the first former Alabama players to win a Super Bowl since Reggie Ragland and Gehrig Dieter claimed the Lombardi Trophy with the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV.
In Sunday’s title bout, Hurts completed 17-of-22 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns, earning Super Bowl MVP honors. Hurts is the first former Alabama player to be named Super Bowl MVP since Joe Namath won the award in Super Bowl III. The fifth-year man added a game-high 72 rushing yards and a touchdown on 11 carries
Smith became the fifth player in NFL history to win a Heisman Trophy, College Football National Championship and a Super Bowl, doing so in his home state of Louisiana. Smith caught four passes for 69 yards and a score, becoming the first former Alabama player to catch a touchdown pass in a Super Bowl.
