FAIRVIEW, Ala. – Fairview High School hosted its annual Veterans Day program on Friday, Nov. 8. Teacher and program organizer Whitney Haynes said there was a great turnout from local veterans.
“Our students are always so proud to invite friends and relatives that have served,” Haynes said. “We hosted over 40 veterans today, plus members of their families as well. Col. Donald Fallin is an FHS (alumnus) and spoke to our middle and high school students today. It’s always good to see the students stop and speak with our veterans after the program.”
Fairview always tries to recognize local veterans and their service as well as share with Aggie students the importance of patriotism and honoring those who fought for our freedoms, Haynes shared.
“My grandfather, Charles Dixon, was a Korean War veteran,” she said. “He always loved attending Veterans Day programs at his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s schools. I think it’s really special to our veterans that we still see them and recognize all they have done for our country. Several years ago, Elliot Free came and spoke with our student body. I remember that being such a sweet day and sweet speech he shared. He passed away not long after. I just remember feeling honored that he could share his story with our students and faculty.”
Haynes added, “Recognizing those people that have sacrificed so that we can attend school, in a safe community, should remain a priority for us all. I would like to thank the teachers, students, administrators and faculty that helped make our program today a success.”
