BREMEN, Ala. – It was Homecoming inside Cranford Stricklin Stadium at Cold Springs High School Friday night, and the Eagles hosted the Lynn Bears for a non-region game. Cold Springs held an early lead, but it was all Lynn after that, as the Bears ended up pulling away and defeating the Eagles 35-16. Prior to the start of the game, Claire Huffstutler was named Homecoming princess and Kenady Graves was crowned Homecoming Queen.

Cold Springs got the ball to start out the game and ended up turning the ball over on downs. Lynn converted a fourth down to keep its opening series alive, and after back-to-back false start penalties, back-to-back big runs gave them another first down. They punched it in two plays later on a three-yard run to take a 7-0 lead with 4:34 remaining in the opening quarter. It didn’t take long for the Eagles to respond, as Mason Gable returned the kickoff 90 yards to the house. They converted the two-point conversion, as that gave them an 8-7 lead.

A big run by Lynn, plus a penalty on Cold Springs, put the ball at the 14. They would later find the end zone on a two-yard run to give the Bears a 14-8 lead with 1:38 remaining in the first quarter. An Eagle punt gave the ball right back to Lynn. A pair of big passes by the Bears put the ball at the 12-yard line, and two plays later, they scored on a four-yard run to stretch their lead to 21-8 with 9:20 remaining in the first half. Matt Williams got a first down for Cold Springs on its next possession, but the Eagles ended up turning the ball over on downs.

Back-to-back punts gave the ball back to the Bears, and behind a pair of big passes and a pair of Eagle penalties, they had the ball at the four. They ended the first half by throwing a four-yard touchdown pass, and Lynn took a 28-8 lead at the half.

Cold Springs’ defense forced a three-and-out to start out the third quarter. On the second play of its series, Ayden Black threw a 65-yard dart to Mason Gable to put them at the 13. Later on that series, Black’s 12-yard run had them at the six, and four plays later, Williams punched it in from a yard out. The Eagles converted their two-point conversion to cut it to 28-16 with 5:49 remaining in the third quarter. The Bears quickly responded on its next series, as a 48-yard touchdown run on just the second play gave them a 35-16 lead.

Cold Springs looked to answer right back on its next series. Williams kept the series alive twice for the Eagles on a pair of short runs, and a 22-yard pass from Black to Breydon Hallmon had them at the 40. They went backwards after that, and on fourth down, Black’s pass got picked off. Lynn ran the remaining time off the clock to help secure a 35-16 win over Cold Springs (3-3).

Black went 6/15 for 100 yards and an interception for the Eagles. Gable had the 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and Williams added a touchdown on the ground.

Cold Springs will travel to West End next Friday night.
