The Cullman County Fair will run from Oct. 3-12, at the Cullman County Fairgrounds. (Cullman County Fair)

CULLMAN, Ala. – The Hay People have arrived; the crisp air is soon to follow and fall is alive in Cullman. With the changing seasons comes the Cullman County Fair. This year, running from Oct. 3-12, the seasonal favorite attraction promises 10 days of fair food, thrill rides, carefully executed exhibits and pageants.

Admission to the Cullman County Fair is $8 for attendees aged 10 and older and free for children 9 and younger. Ride tickets must be purchased separately, but the exhibits are free of charge.

Exhibits will feature local field and garden crops, along with honey, canned goods, baked goods, art, handiwork, photography for amateurs and professionals and sewing.

Cullman Lions Club President Chris Brooks said, “Every year the exhibits get better. From the artwork and home canned goods to the giant vegetables, I always enjoy seeing the talent and traditions of Cullman residents on display at the Cullman County Fair.”

This year, the fair is offering a new competition: a Scarecrow Contest. The not-so-scary creations will be on exhibit in the Agricultural Hall, near the giant vegetables and produce they would traditionally protect.

Animals are also a highlight of the fair, with showings of cattle, sheep, goats and horses, as well as dairy goats and dairy cows. Young farmers and hands will get the opportunity to parade their show animals around the arena to be judged in different categories. For friends who simply must pet a furry fellow after seeing the extraordinary pets, a petting zoo will be on-site.

Household pets also have a turn in the limelight for the second year in a row with the Youth Pet Show. The show will be open to two types of animals: dogs, and other than dogs. Other than dogs is just that, any other household pet that craves the spotlight with an adorable trick, a gorgeous coat or a beautiful build.

Beauty queens will compete during the family friendly fun, with the collection of pageants traditionally held in the Coca-Cola Theater. Groups span from Tiny Fair Princess for ages 3-4 to Miss Cullman County Fair. The latter is the fair’s flagship pageant and sees representatives from each local public high school and Cullman Christian School compete for a $3,000 scholarship award sponsored by the Cullman County Fair Association.

Senior Day will be Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the Coca-Cola Theater. From 10 a.m.-1 p.m., seniors over the age of 55 will be admitted to the fairgrounds for free, allowing them to explore the exhibits and fellowship with friends at a leisurely pace. The fair also hosts Student Day, admitting all students into the fair for free. On Monday, Oct. 7, all area student get in free until 5 p.m.

“Year after year, one of my favorite things is to watch the children just stop and take in all the lights, sounds and smells and their faces lights up with joy. There is nothing like the Cullman County Fair,” smiled Brooks.
