ARAB, Ala. – The Alabama Cooperative Extension System and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) are partnering to host a High Tunnel Production Field Day on Sept.19 from 3-6 p.m. at Bare Bottom Farm in Arab. This free event is specifically designed for military veterans and beginner farmers interested in learning about high tunnel production, a method used to extend the growing season for fruits and vegetables.

Participants will receive hands-on instruction on high tunnel crop production, pest management, plastic mulch, drip irrigation and NRCS funding opportunities, such as the EQIP cost-share program, which supports projects like high tunnel construction. A panel of local farmers, including those from Bare Bottom Farm, will also share their experiences with operating high tunnel systems.

Kira Sims, Cullman County Extension Office coordinator, emphasized the value of this workshop, especially for beginners. “High tunnel production provides season extension for produce and opportunities to try new crops or get popular crops onto the market sooner,” she said. “With the funding support and educational resources available, it is worth considering for new and beginning farmers who do not have a lot of land and need to start small.”

Space for the workshop is limited. Interested participants can register online at www.aces.edu/go/ht. Light refreshments will be provided.

For more information on the workshop, contact Kira Sims at 256-737-9386 or via email at kira.sims@auburn.edu. Bare Bottom Farm will provide location information after registration.
