HANCEVILLE, Ala. – It was a relatively quiet meeting in Hanceville’s council chambers on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023. The council heard from resident Stephen Gannon concerning the second reading of Ordinance 656 to rezone a property he owns to R3, allowing the construction of a duplex to create more affordable housing in the area.

“I’ve actually lived on that street just two doors down for about 15 years now,” said Gannon, expressing his intent to be a good steward of the property and stating that he owns and maintains two other properties as rentals.

“It will be a two-bedroom, two bath on each side. I’m hoping to provide some more affordable housing in the area,” he explained.

In other council business:

Lucille Powell was appointed to the Zoning Board of Adjustments, place 4, to serve a consecutive three-year term, beginning Jan. 2, 2024.

The council approved paying $4,000 to the Hanceville Public Library for cabinet installation; the library has received a grant to pay for the installation and will repay the council when the monies are received.

The council accepted former mayor Kenneth Nail’s resignation and removed him from financial documentation.
