CULLMAN, Ala. – As many residents of Cullman County brave the wintery chill for dazzling light displays, outdoor holiday markets and even ice skating at the Cullman Christkindlmarkt, other residents strive to survive the winter with thin blankets and tents. Cullman’s unhoused population has increased, and with temperatures dropping, local nonprofit The Link of Cullman County has stepped in to gather supplies to distribute to those in need this Christmas season – and they need your help.

The Link is asking for supplies to help restore dignity and meet basic needs of the individuals experiencing homelessness in the community. These items will go into backpacks that The Link can distribute to unhoused clients when they come in for a hot shower, to do laundry or to grab food from Master’s Hand pantry.

Items like soap, shampoo, a comb or brush can help restore a sense of self to those who may be experiencing extreme self-confidence issues due to homelessness, while items like cozy socks and warm fleece blankets will help cut the chill when sleeping outdoors this season. The Link also encourages the inclusion of more thoughtful item: a handwritten note, a prayer card, even a gift card for a hot meal can go a long way for someone experiencing homelessness. A full list of requested items can be found below.

Items need to be brought to The Link by Saturday, Dec.16, in order to fill the backpacks for the Christmas season. The Link is located at 1708 Ninth St. SE.
