WEST POINT, Ala. – The Brandin’ Iron Steakhouse in West Point has hosted a free meal for area veterans and their spouses for the past several years. This year’s event will be Monday, Nov. 20, from noon-6 p.m.

Brandin’ Iron Manager Josh Speakman said the meal is a communitywide effort with full support and participation from what he calls the “home team.”

“I call it the ‘home team’ because it consists of like-minded individuals who have a passion for community service and enjoy lifting others up,” Speakman said. “I’m not going to try to name individuals, but the groups that are always essential are the sheriff’s office, VFW, Brandin’ Iron staff, West Point High School, West Point Elementary and many others.”

He said additional volunteers are always welcome.

“We can always use volunteers on Saturday (Nov. 18), which is (the) majority of our food prepping day,” Speakman said. “If you will just call the restaurant and leave your name, number and what you are interested in doing to help, I will call you back and we will figure something out in regard to the event.”

The free meal will include oven-baked and fried turkey, pineapple and brown sugar glazed ham, chicken dressing, sweet potato casserole, green beans and a variety of desserts. Speakman said everything is cooked from scratch.

“We will also have dinner delivered to homebound or disabled vets by deputies with the sheriff’s office,” Speakman said. “If you have someone you would like to include, you can also contact the restaurant with the name, address and phone number of the veteran. Please also include how many plates they are needing. Friday (Nov. 17) is the deadline to submit names for home delivery.”
