CULLMAN, Ala. – Alabama Strawberry Festival Senior Day, hosted by the Cullman County Commission on Aging and Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism, took place Thursday, May 2, at the Festhalle. The day was just for seniors, allowing them to cut loose and enjoy fellowship with their peers before the crowds of thousands swooped in and took over in and around the Festhalle and Depot Park Friday and Saturday.

Seniors were treated to their own version of the Strawberry Festival, with adult and elder care organizations setting up informational booths and giving away treats and prizes to the guests who stopped by for information or resources.

Lunch was served, but not before The Cadillacs out of Florence, Alabama, upped the tempo with covers of the oldies-but-goodies, giving the young at heart a chance to show off their dancing skills. Attendees did “The Twist” until they shouted and a few even lost their shoes and threw their heads back with deep belly laughs while joining the bouncing crowd for a vigorous buck dance.

Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs and Cullman County Commission Chairman Jeff Clemons stopped in to see the celebration and share a few words of thanks and appreciation.

“You all could not have picked (a better) day to be here,” said Jacobs, noting that the weekend forecast called for rain. “We couldn’t have had a more beautiful day. We want to thank both of the senior centers for putting this on and we’re glad you’re here.”

Clemons joined in, sharing, “We love our seniors across Cullman County; we can’t thank y’all enough for being here. We thank God every day for Cullman County.”
