SOUTH VINEMONT, Ala. — The Vinemont Sports Complex will be alive with the aromas of barbecued delights on Saturday, Oct. 21, during the 2nd Annual Vinemont Chillin’ N Grillin BBQ Fest. This year, the fest introduces the “Battle of the Heroes” People’s Choice BBQ competition.

Choosing Sept. 11 to announce the event held special significance for Vinemont Council member Chris Thompson. “This is a day of remembrance. It’s a gesture of our gratitude, a way to spotlight and honor our everyday heroes who often go underappreciated,” said Thompson. “We see the treatment of heroes around the world and the nation. We strive to elevate them, acknowledging their indispensable roles in our lives.”

Two main competitions will punctuate the event: The Battle of the Heroes (People’s Choice) and the Backyard BBQ Competition. Grand champions in both categories will earn accolades for their culinary skills. The People’s Choice category is still accepting entries from fire departments, police departments, and all EMS personnel. Festival attendees will have the privilege to sample and vote for their top picks.

“The goal of this event is to shine a light on our everyday heroes and offer them the recognition they truly deserve,” reiterated Thompson.

Prize money awaits the champions: $1,000 for the grand champion and $750 for the reserve grand champion.

Departments currently slated to participate include Cullman EMS, Vinemont Providence Fire Department, Berlin Fire Department, Cullman City Fire and Rescue Department, Cullman City Police Department, and Cullman County Sheriff’s Office. The event organizers encourage more emergency responder departments to join in the friendly competition.

Entertainment isn’t limited to BBQ. Live performances by Justin and Tab and Raging Bones will keep the energy high. For younger attendees, a kids’ fun zone with inflatables and a rock-climbing wall promises ample fun. Those feeling altruistic can donate blood at the on-site LifeSouth blood donation vehicle. Additionally, a car and truck showcase will capture the attention of automobile enthusiasts.

Sampling the BBQ will require a $10 ticket, but general attendance is free.

Vendors and artists looking to participate can still sign up. Those interested in competing or sponsorship can contact 256-737-5411 or email info@townofsouthvinemont.com. The registration deadline is set for Oct. 11.
