Hartselle woman stabs man, kills son in early morning attack

HARTSELLE, Ala. –  According to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, an early morning knife attack left an adult male injured and an 8-year-old child dead in Hartselle.

Official statements by the MCSO stated the incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. when a stabbing call was received by Morgan County 911. Morgan County deputies responded to the scene on Village Drive near Hartselle, assisted by the Priceville Police Department.

“Once on scene, deputies located an adult male suffering from a stab wound and one deceased 8-year-old boy. The adult was treated at the scene and transported to Huntsville Hospital by Air Evac,” read the statement.

The MCSO reported an adult female was detained at the scene and taken into custody. The child’s mother, Jennifer Nicole Long, 41, was arrested.

“She is charged with capital murder in the stabbing death of her son, an 8-year-old juvenile,” read the release.

Additional charges are pending.

Long was transported to and booked in the Morgan County Jail. She is being held without bond.

Once the scene was secure the MCSO contacted its SRO team and the Morgan County Schools superintendent and administration. The MCSO stated it worked quickly to have resources available for the school affected by the loss of the student.

Morgan County Schools Superintendent Tracie Turrentine released the following statement:

“It is with great sadness that we have lost one of our students in Morgan County. The student will be remembered for the joy he brought to his friends, classmates, and teachers. My condolences and thoughts go out to the family at this time.

“The loss of a student can be a difficult and challenging situation that can generate a high level of anxiety and distress in students. During this time, as the school community processes this news and copes with grief, please know that support services are available to those who need them.”
