CPD Chief Kenny Culpepper set to retire after 44 years

Mayor: ‘Kenny represents the very best in Cullman’

CULLMAN, Ala. – One of Cullman’s most familiar faces is set to retire from the Cullman Police Department (CPD) in just a couple of weeks. Chief Kenny Culpepper, who has been with the CPD for 44 years, and served as chief for 34 years, will retire Dec. 1. The Cullman City Council at its meeting this week recognized Culpepper, the longest serving chief in the city’s history.  

Culpepper began his career with the department in 1978 and was named interim police chief in 1988 by then Mayor Jack Sides. Shortly after, the Cullman City Council named Culpepper chief when Mayor Therman Murphree took office the same year. 

At the council meeting this week, Mayor Woody Jacobs read the City’s proclamation honoring Culpepper, which said, in part, “Kenny represents the very best in Cullman, living his life in humble and devoted service to our community, our state and our country.” 

Other business  

In other business, two new members were appointed to the City of Cullman Tree Commission – Joel Moon and Edgar Veigl. Member Rachel Dawsey was reappointed. Commission members are appointed for four-year terms. 

Upon announcing the upcoming Christmas in Cullman Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting scheduled for Friday, Dec. 2, Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism (CPRST) Executive Director Nathan Anderson encouraged attendees to arrive early as on-street parking will not be available, and, based on recent events’ attendance, a large crowd is expected. The parade will begin at 6 p.m. in front of the Busy Bee Café and will make its way north along First Avenue to Depot Park, where the tree will be lit.  

The following were approved: 

  • A special event request from Kelly Pulliam of CPRST to hold a Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting in Depot Park on Friday, Dec. 2, from 6-10 p.m. 
  • A special event request from Kelly Pulliam of CPRST to hold the Christkindlmarkt Friday, Dec. 9, 

and Saturday, Dec. 10, from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 11, from 1-5 p.m. at the Festhalle 

  • Adoption of the 2023 Council Meeting Schedule 
  • Approval of the Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday Feb. 24-26, 2023   

The next council meeting is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. Meetings are held at Cullman City Hall.
