VINEMONT, Ala. – The Vinemont Town Council on Tuesday evening discussed the purchase of new business license software from Local Government Corporation (LGC).

Mayor Radginal Dodson said the entire state will soon be using the same or similar software.

“This outfit will keep up with everything and make sure everything is running nice and smooth,” he said.

“Everybody will be in the same boat. No matter how small the municipality is, they are going to have to adhere to all the same rules. Every town in the state of Alabama will be on the same system.”

Town Clerk Kayecea Sasser currently uses Excel spreadsheets to keep track of those with business licenses. “I have no software. I use QuickBooks to print out the addresses and information. There’s no software that we have that keeps everything accountable.”

The new software is meant to help process and keep track of new businesses and business owners who need to renew licenses each year. It will also help with monthly reporting to the Department of Revenue.

The council said some new businesses in town have vendors that have not obtained the appropriate delivery licenses from the Town. Sasser said any business that operates in Vinemont will need to acquire a business license from the Town of Vinemont. Any business that delivers more than $7,500 worth of goods in the license year will need a delivery license. Delivery licenses are $25 annually.

“(They are) $25, and you have 20-25 delivery companies that you’re not aware of delivering, it adds up,” said Sasser.

The Town of Vinemont can take business owners to court over the issue for restitution. The League of Municipalities also helps the Town with lost revenue regarding insurance companies doing business in town. Sasser sends the League a spreadsheet each year of the insurance companies that have previously purchased a business license and the League will contact them so that the Town does not have to spend funds on postage to continue sending notices to those companies.

“Business licenses make sure they are operating legally, and they are paying sales tax,” said Sasser.

The Town currently has about 435 business licenses it renews each year.

The council approved the purchase of the software from LGC in the amount of $2,375.

The Town of Vinemont’s free Thanksgiving meal will be held Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Vinemont Schools lunchroom from 11a.m.-1p.m. The meal will feed 750 people.
