VINEMONT, Ala. – The Vinemont Town Council on Tuesday approved a 10-year, $485,000 tax abatement for The Shaddix Company for the construction of a new building addition, a $8.7 million project.

Cullman Economic Development Agency Project Manager Stanley Kennedy discussed the abatement with the council. The Shaddix Company, a second-generation, family-owned precast manufacturing company established in 1971 by Tommy Shaddix and his wife Mitchelene, will be adding a building extension and new product line to its business. The product line was not disclosed.

Kennedy said the extension will provide 10 new jobs, the average wage of which will be $17 an hour.

“Using economic analysis provided by the U.S. Chamber, we estimate those jobs will create an additional $10,000-plus in annual tax revenue in our community,” he said, “and local businesses will receive over $100,000 in revenue every year.”

It is estimated that the project will also generate more than $300,000 in revenue for local schools over the 10-year abatement period.

Kennedy explained the project will not take any revenue away from the town, saying, “You don’t lose any money here because this money doesn’t exist yet, and you’re going to get the money in the long term. You’ve going to have a company growing in your community.”

The Shaddix Company is located at 207 Park Drive.

In other business:

  • The council approved the Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) Division F Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan, an action plan to reduce the long-term risk to life and property after natural hazards.
  • The council voted to surplus a washer and dryer no longer used by the Town. They were previously used at the sports complex to launder cleaning rags. When COVID-19 began, the Town was required to use disposable cleaning products and now has no use for the washer and dryer. The set will be given to the Cullman County Child Development Center’s soon-to-be-completed Life Skills Center. The center will act as a mock apartment in which students can learn life skills like cooking and cleaning in a functional setting.
  • A Little Free Library will be added to the Christian Hart Food Pantry located next to the Vinemont-Providence Volunteer Fire Department. Councilwoman Sonya Copeland requested that the Little Free Library be added next to the pantry at the council’s last meeting. Copeland will be providing the box for the library that will be installed by the Town.

The Vinemont Town Council meets on the secondTuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at town hall. Work session is at 5:30. The public is welcome to attend.
